Feature Artist: Terry Jones

Terry Jones is a lifelong artist who says he cannot remember a time when he did not draw or consider himself an artist. He was born in Uvalde, Texas in 1948. He had his first painting lessons in oil paint when he was eight years old and this was his primary medium for many years. He studied and painted in Uvalde with Kurt Johnson, the artist and art instructor at Southwest Texas Junior College for many years. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art at Angelo State University, where he studied with the noted artists Otis Lumpkin and Suzanne Klotz. On graduation he used his science minor to pursue his thirty year career with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. During all these years of work and raising a family Jones continued to paint.

About ten years ago an artist friend gave him a set of sixty Rembrandt pastels and he has been using pastels more than oils since discovering the wonderful qualities of pastel. Terry considers pastels an explosive medium for him to explore his love of color, color relationships, and form, usually with the landscape as a motif although he enjoys using abstraction immensely.

His paintings are in numerous private collections here in San Antonio and scattered across the country from Portland, Oregon to New York City. One of his pastels is in the permanent art collection of the University of Texas in San Antonio. His work can be seen at Private Stock and Barry Framing in San Antonio. He also exhibits at the Austin Street Gallery in Rockport, Texas.

Artist’s Tip of the Month

Greg Biolchini's trick of making spacers for matless paintings: "I get 1/4" wide wooden strips at craft stores and paint them black, then use gold Rub N Buff along the wood strip. The strip(which is wedged in between the frame and glass) adds a gold line inside the frame that creates a nice effect." The Pastel Journal, December 2008, page 50.
